How to prep for the perfect tan
Spray tans are popular all year round at Cherish! Beauty therapist Eiren has put together her top tanning tips!
To achieve a perfect tan, preparation is the key. Time should be taken to exfoliate and moisturise the skin before your tan.
By following these simple tips you can help to avoid a patchy, uneven tan.
Step 1 – Hair removal
Make sure all hair removal is completed 24-48 hours before you plan to have your tan. If you were to do hair removal after the tan then it could remove the tan or it can become uneven. Hair removal too soon prior to a tan may mean hair follicles are still open when the tan is applied and the skin may become irritated.
Step 2 – Exfoliate
Exfoliation should be done at least 24 hours before you plan to have a tan, this will ensure an even result that will also last longer. Take your time to thoroughly exfoliate your body including your face, paying special attention to drier areas e.g. elbows, knees, backs of ankles and even the back of your hands.
Step 3 – Moisturising
Moisturising the whole body should be avoided directly before you have your tan as it can act as a barrier. However any drier areas e.g. elbows, knees and backs of ankles can be lightly moisturised to prevent the tan clinging and becoming darker.
Step 4 – Loose clothing
Make sure you bring loose dark clothing to your appointment to change into after your tan. Tight jeans or boots will rub and abrade your freshly applied tan before it has been absorbed.

I am usually a ‘home tanner’. I arrived at Cherish a little nervous for my spray tan and was warmly welcomed by Hayley who took me into the purpose built tan room. The procedure was explained and I was offered the choice of disposable underwear or the option to bare all and avoid any annoying tan lines! Hayley asked me how I would normally tan in the sun and how dark I wanted to go. I wanted a nice deep tan so she selected a tone and filled up the bottle in the machine.
The tan itself was very comfortable and was expertly applied in just a few minutes. Hayley told me how to stand and when to turn around so that she could apply the product. I felt completely at ease and not awkward at all. My tan felt dry almost straight away and I got dressed just a couple of minutes later and it was all done and I went home after booking myself a few more little treats!
The next morning I showered off the residue as explained and my tan was perfect, really natural colour and flawless. You really couldn’t tell that it was out of a bottle! It lasted over a week and I had lots of compliments on well I looked and I felt fabulous – this will be a regular treatment for me, especially for any nights out or special occasions. Thanks Cherish!
